Tell us about The Kingsford Smith? What’s behind the name?
The name was suggested to us by a friend as a cool sounding name for a country music band. Not being up with our history as well as we should and not realizing that the Sydney Airport was called the same name, we found out when we came to register the domain that there was this famous fellow who was an aviator called Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and the SYD airport was named after him.
How did the band start?
We started out just writing music for our own entertainment and what began as a hobby and what was to be a demo EP blew out into a fully fledged album with international players from Nashville. Overkill I know, but that’s how it began a little over 3 years ago.
How would you describe your band?
Im pretty sure we don’t fit into the Aussie Country genre, and I’m pretty sure we don’t fit into the American Country genre either. We’re just 2 blokes that sing songs with a country flavor that we enjoy in the hope others do also.
What’s the music scene like for country rock artists in the Frankston area?
The Frankston Area is pretty devoid of Country music. At most of the venues that are advertised in the area I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one. Maybe we’ll change that!
If you had to choose one song you’ve written that best defines your band which one would it be?
Impossible to say, I think our music is so diverse in style from American type to Blues Rock that I couldn’t put my finger on any one song
Tell us about your upcoming album and single?
Our upcoming single ‘She is gone’ is very different to all our other tracks, but its very laid back and chill. The Lap Steel gives it a great edge and the timing is different which sets it apart . It was the last song we wrote for our album which will be entitled ‘Countrified’ and has been 3+ years in the making
In this day and age where anyone is pretty much able to pick up an instrument, what would you say sets your band apart from the rest?
We are different to most. Like I mentioned, you cant really slot us into a particular genre and we have a wide variety of styles. No song is like the next.
Where are people able to hear your songs?
For those that are released already, iTunes, Spotify, iHeart Radio etc and a handful of community stations
Are you playing any shows anytime soon?
Not next week, but are in the process of arranging a tour of sorts to more remote areas. It’s hard for country folk to get to the bigger cities to listen to good music, so the plan is to bring it to them!
What is your proudest moment/greatest achievement as a band?
Simply finishing the album. Bucket list item ticked! Every milestone from here on in is a great achievement as far as we’re concerned
Tell us 3 bands that we should be listening to/be keeping an eye out for?
Deep Creek Road are a fav of ours, Nolan Neal & LANco
Anything else you’d like to add?
Loving the opportunity music is giving us, meeting new people and connecting with people
